Many people ask me how I ended up playing the cello. I’ve always been
involved with music. Most of my influences come from being in a musical
family. Everyone in my family can either sing, or play an instrument. My
mother who is my inspiration is a talented singer who sang backup for various
recording artists. Music has always been apart of my life in some way, either
at school or at church .I attended an elementary school that focused on fine
arts, and while I was still in elementary, I picked up some violin classes with
Mr. Wu, I was the only one who took his class seriously and I enjoyed the
violin and the music classes and I decided to pursue it after elementary.
During fifth grade I moved to the Fort Bend area and attended Lexington
Creek Elementary.
In the last few months of school, some teachers from different middle
schools came over to recruit students and exhibit instruments. I went to the
orchestra programs open house and walked in with many other students who
were just as excited as I was. At first my teacher wanted to me to try the bass,
and I wasn’t having it! I said this is way too big! There’s no way I’m playing
it! Finally she handed me the cello and said this is it, this is perfect, and I
agreed.
When middle school started I was more excited about my first day in
orchestra class more than anything else. I was in this huge room with all these
wonderful instruments and I had a very enthusiastic teacher who wanted to
help us learn the craft of our new stringed instruments. It was more than
coming from a musical background that gave me inspiration to keep playing,
it was my enthusiastic teacher who cared enough to help me learn how to play.
It was my instructors that helped me along the way and encouraged me to
keep playing when times got really hard and when I really wanted to give up
(there were many times that I wanted to quit). I’ve had really awesome
teachers that taught me everything that I know now, and I’ve had some really
mean teachers that were just into private lessons just for the money. I want to
be one of those fantastic and enthusiastic teachers that inspire young people
to become the best players that they can be. I know what its like to be a
beginner in the music world. Not everyone starts off on top or sliding right
into fourth position.
Musicians are dreamers and we can achieve anything with a little sweat, and
lots of practice with patient and understanding teachers, like myself! My goal
is to savor every minute to ensure improvement during the beginning stages. I’
m enthusiastic about learning and teaching and improving the quality of just
about everything like the quality of my students’ sound, posture, music
reading, sight-reading and playing skills.
