| Q. My shoulders, arms and back hurt after atleast 30 minutes of practicing, is there any way to prevent this from happening again? Or what can I do to make it better? -Andrew (Houston, TX) A. A sturdy chair with a great seat cushion will do the trick! A lot of people dont think of playing an instrument as a rigourous exercise, but you're moving your arms back and forth (a lot) and with your (good) posture you are forcing yourself to sit straight up during your entire practice time. Before you practice, stretch your arms while relaxing your shoulders. I even find taking a 3-5 minute break every 15 minutes helpful. Also there are some things to think about, are you practicing at night or during the day? Many of my studets find that if they practice in the morning they're are not as tired compared to when they practice after school, homework/studying, and soccer practice. Be in tune with your body and figure out when its best for you to practice each day. |
